University of La Verne Student Center

25,000 sf Student Center

Highly constrained on two sides, the linear building occupies a prominent site at the intersection of two important streets connecting the campus to the larger city. The Campus Center is viewed as instrumental in consolidating disparate student life activities across the campus, and equally key to increasing recruitment and retention of students and faculty on campus. The University of La Verne has evolved into an enormously rich tapestry of cultures and age groups. The building's ceremonial circulation spine, main hall, and multi-level gallery terraces create a mixing chamber for stimulating dialogue and socialization, enriching the university experience beyond the classroom. Visual transparency - the ability to see and to be seen - was paramount to architectural expression. The north-facing glass wall connects the life of the building to the campus and to the city beyond. The openness, rich material palette, day-lighting, and careful programming contribute to the building’s success as a welcoming icon of student life.
