This project is one of LAUSD’s comprehensive K-12 campuses, constructed at the site of the former Ambassador Hotel in the Mid-Wilshire District of LA. An elementary, middle and high school sit on a 24-acre site and collectively serves about 4,500 students living in the surrounding nine-block radius. Many of these students were formerly bused to distant, overcrowded schools in other communities. The combined campus provides a safe place for students to learn, while allowing them to develop a stronger connection with the learning environment and deeper relationships with faculty.
The former Ambassador Hotel, opened in 1921 and also the location of the 1968 assassination of presidential candidate and senator, Robert F. Kennedy. We responded to its architectural richness and cultural significance by incorporating several portions of the old hotel into the K-12 campus. The result is a majestic academic environment that includes multiple libraries, small learning centers, multipurpose and technology centers, auditorium, Olympic pool, and joint-use playfields. The project is capped by a linear urban park, Inspiration Park, which is dedicated to the social-justice work of RFK and others.
