Solano Avenue Elementary School

Comprehensive Modernization

In addition to providing the needed administrative and educational program space, the primary design objectives for the expansion project were to use the new building to stitch together the various levels of this hillside campus, to create well defined play areas organized around central circulation hub, and to reconcile multiple access points into a universal campus entryway. The three-story resolution of the program connects with the existing building via a bridge at the third floor. While at the second floor of the building, mass is carved out to create a sheltered lunch area connecting directly to the play area beyond. The slight depression of the first floor into the hillside minimized excavation elsewhere and allowed maintaining existing utility infrastructure intact. The modern geometric expression of the expansion offset against the existing mission-style architecture refreshes the Solano school campus presence and identity.
